The Indian Institution of Technology Bhubaneshwar also called IIT Bhubaneshwar or IIT-BBS is a public Institution in Engineering that was launched in 2008 by the Govt. of India. It was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India and is located at Bhubaneshwar, Odisha in India. The IIT Bhubaneshwar was created under the Institutes of Technology Act 2011 which was passed in the year 2011 March in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha it was passed in the year 2012 April.

The IIT-Bhubaneshwar was one of the eight new Indian Institute of Technology that was established in India. IIT-BBS started its education batches in July 2008 from the campus of IIT Kharagpur, and in July 2009 it was entirely shifted to his original place to the city of Bhubaneshwar. The IIT-BBS offers an admission of the students into B. Tech, M. Tech, and Ph. D programs. The Institute from 2015-16 has started operating his academic sessions from his permanent campus which are situated in Argul. Every year the academic session starts in July, and the director of the Institute is Prof. R. V. Raja Kumar.

History of IIT Bhubaneshwar:

The former prime minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh announced the IITs expansion in the country on 15 August 2007 the 60th anniversary of the Indian country’s independence because of this statement the birth of the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneshwar came in the process. Further, the meeting held on 19 Dec 2007 in its 54th session of the National Development Council of the Planning Commission got approved as the course of the 11th IIT 5-year plan that was from 2007 to 2012.

The Minister of the Human Resource Development Shri. Arjun Singh gave the actual green signal in a press conference in March 2008. Later it was decided that IIT Kharagpur which was the first IIT in India would look after all the setting of the new IIT-Bhubaneshwar for 2-3 years by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, Govt. of India. It was decided further that the Director of the IIT Kharagpur would be the Director of the new IIT and all the selection of the Chairman, Board of Governors would be the same as IIT Kharagpur till further selection would be done for IIT-Bhubaneshwar.

In the meeting of the Union Cabinet which was held on 17th July 2008 approved the proposal of eight new IITs including IIT-Bhubaneshwar will also come in progress and the cabinet approved a budget of 760 Crore rupees for each IIT. The Cabinet in his meeting also approved for the post of Director and registered along with 30 faculty members per year for every new IIT. It was also decided that the IIT-Bhubaneshwar would start functioning under the IIT Bhubaneshwar Society to be registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. All the documents got filled on 19th July 2008 with the Registrar of Societies Odisha, Cuttack for the registration of the IIT-Bhubaneshwar Society and it was registered on 22 July 2008.

Thus the IIT-Bhubaneshwar was the first IIT among the 8th new IITs to become functional and with a sanction to intake around 40 students each in the departments of Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. All the classes for the first starting batch of IIT-Bhubaneshwar of the students were started from the campus of IIT Kharagpur at Kharagpur. With the notification of Amendment in the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India on 29th June 2012 the IIT-Bhubaneshwar became an Institute of National Importance which was published in the Gazette of India dated on 2nd July 2012.

The MHRD had made a committee for the Site Identification for the IIT-Bhubaneshwar under the Chairmanship of Shri Ashok Takhur, Additional Secretary of the Govt. of India who visited the Odisha sites during 24th and 25th Dec 2008. After visiting Odisha, four sites were shown by the Govt. of Odisha from which the committee recommended the site which was at Jatni. The committee recommendation of the Jatni site was approved by the Govt. of India on 13th Jan 2009. Thus the Govt. of Odisha agreed to provide the land which was around 936 acres which were free of cost given by the Odisha Govt. from which 518 acres land was given physically with possession on 10th Feb 2009.

The Govt. of Odisha also committed to providing many other facilities such as a four-lane National Highway road no. Five that is Kolkata- Chennai to the IIT premises. In May 2009 the Deputy Director of IIT Kharagpur Prof. M Chakraborty joined as the Director post of the IIT Bhubaneshwar. Thus the position of Director was to replace from the earlier Director Prof. D. Acharya of the Institute. In May 2009 IIT-Bhubaneshwar started functioning in the city of Bhubaneshwar, and all the 2008 batch students were shifted to Bhubaneshwar from Kharagpur, and 117 new batches of students were admitted in IIT-BBS.

The Campus of IIT Bhubaneshwar:

The IIT-Bhubaneshwar campus contains land around 936 acres which was allotted by the Govt. of Odisha free of cost. On 12th Feb 2009, the foundation stone of the permanent campus of IIT-BBS was laid at Arugula, which is on the outskirts of Bhubaneshwar. The state Govt. has also supported the IIT-BBS in many ways such as the construction of four-lane highway no 5 and supply of electricity and water for the campus this all things made the work easier to develop the IIT-BBS campus.

For the Innovation Center for Climate Change the state Govt. has also promised to provide 75 acres of land on the Puri-Konark coastline. The Airport of Biju Patnaik Bhubaneshwar is just 25 kilometers from the campus of IIT-BBS. The side of the campus is covered by the Barunai Hill on the one hand and with a reserve forest nearby.

For the support of industry-oriented research activities programs, a Science Park was being set up as the department of the institution. The campus contains around 10,000 students and 1,100 faculty members, and from the academic year of 2015-16, the institute has started working on its new campus at Arugula. On 14th August 2011 the Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik the IIT construction work at Aragul village near Jatni.

Marine campus of IIT Bhubaneshwar:

In 2011 the IIT-Bhubaneshwar made a separate marine campus and was the first IIT to set up such a department to research the rising of the sea levels, ecology, disaster management, marine ecosystems and fishery development. The campus of the marine department which will also be a part of the school of Earth, Ocean & Environment has been set up near Chilka Lake. The marine campus will also have education departments for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The Educational Hub of IIT Bhubaneshwar:

The main advantage of IIT-Bhubaneshwar is its location at Bhubaneshwar. There are many other universities and research institutes that are present in Bhubaneshwar or are in the process such as AIIMS Bhubaneshwar, NISER, IIT, XIMB. The AIIMS Institute is like as Medical Institute and the Physics Institute, NISER campus place is just 2km away from the IIT-BBS and XIMB is the Indian Govt. proposed National Universities of international level. To make a huge development for this Institute, the Government of India is investing a sum of 780 crore Rs which is around 120million $ in the next few years.

Connectivity:

A four-lane expressway is built by the Odisha state government directly from the National Highway No. 5 to the increased connectivity of new IIT. The distance between the campus and the Biju Patnaik airport is 25 Km only, and also the railway station is 4 Km away. At the distance of only 12 Km from the campus new airport is being constructed.

Surroundings:

There are many surrounding attraction advantages in IIT-Bhubaneshwar such as the major steel, petrochemical, power and heavy industries combined with major ports such as one at Paradip, the emergency of Bhubaneshwar as one of the IT hubs of the nation. The Bhubaneshwar is also a major attraction place for the tourist because of Puri sea beach, the Konark Sun Temple, Chilka lagoon, gorges, and waterfalls.

Academics programs of the IIT Bhubaneshwar:

There is a two-semester divided in the academic year the spring semester, and the autumn semester this is the regular semester of the Institute besides this there is a shorter summer quarter in which some of the courses are offered to the students. The IIT-Bhubaneshwar has the credit-based system of evaluation performance which is set to every course depend on the total number of working hours, tutorials, lectures and the laboratory program sessions. For the undergraduate programs, the course load per semester is around 21-24 credits.

After completion of Higher Secondary that is 12th the applicants must have to give the JEE Joint Entrance Test for the sake of Admission in the IIT. In 2016 the total of undergraduate applicants admits around 260 in which 40 applicants were in each mentioned department & 20 applicants are for Metallurgical & Material Engineering. Every Integrated course has ten applicants. The institutes are planning for the expansion in admission and education they have expected to have around 2500 applicants who will get admission within 3-4 years, and till 15 years this will expand tp 15000 applicants approximately.

Alma Fiesta: In IIT-Bhubaneshwar the festival Alma Fiesta is the yearly socio-cultural festival and is usually performed in the midweeks of Jan and is run for three days. In these festivals, the events are organized by the students of IIT, and the events have impressed the audience also very much. The events which are performed in the festival cultural performances like Odissi, Euphony means War of rock bands, Faceoff means Stage play competition, Gotipua to clay modeling and many more cultural programs. The IIT also organized events such as dance forms like hip-hop, vocals, duets, karaoke, spelling bee, pencil sketching and also the youth marathon.

Wissenaire: In IIT-Bhubaneshwar the festival Wissenaire is the yearly Techno-management festival and is usually performed in Jan and the events are run for three days. The facts of these festivals are held in the permanent campus which is located in Argul, Orissa. The word of the festival “Wissenair” is taken from the German word which means Knowledge Free the ways of the total word to say Knowledge Runs Free. The festival includes events such as quizzing, coding, designing, planning, robotics and testing the creativity and intelligence of the students.
