It has five Regional Institutes of education at Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Mysore, and Shillong to satisfy the educational needs of states and to provide innovative pre-service programs. North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE) is the five Regional Institutes of NCERT and has the mandate to provide academic and technical support on policies and programs of all structures of faculty Education to the Governments of eight northeastern states specifically, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

NERIE is linked to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. It provides a two-year B.Ed course from August 2016 intended for students from the North East Region. The course is a permanent, regular course and accepted by NCTE NCTE. The course has already been offered by other RIE’s for the past some years and it was well-founded and well-received across the country.
