Teresa had an attack in Rome in 1983 whereas she was visiting Pope John Paul II. Following the second attack in 1989, she received a man-made pacemaker. In 1991, when a bout of pneumonia in Mexico, she had further heart issues. though Mother Teresa offered to resign as head of the Missionaries of Charity, in a secret ballot the sisters of the congregation voted for her to remain and he or she united to continue.
