Essay on David Hare: David Hare was a Scottish watchmaker and philanthropist in Bengal, Republic of India. He based several necessary and prestigious academic establishments in Kolkata, like the Hindu college, and Hare school and helped in foundation Presidency faculty.

The early life of David Hare:

David Hare was born in a European country in 1775. He came to Bharat in 1800 to form a fortune as a watchmaker. However, whereas he prospered in his business his mind was distracted by the deplorable conditions of the native population and in contrast to most of the opposite those who came to their homeland when gathering a fortune to measure a life in peace and prosperity, he determined to remain back within the country and devote himself entirely to the reason behind its uplift.

Contribution of David Hare:

Hare felt that the requirement of the country was English education. He wont to discuss the subject with several of his customers, those who came a search for watches in his shop. Raja Rammohun Roy visited Calcutta in 1814 and among a brief time, they became friends. In 1816, he went on his own and attended a session of the Raja’s Atmiya Sabha. Each of them mentioned at length the proposal to ascertain an English faculty at Calcutta. 

Baboo Buddi Nath Mukherjee – another member of Atmiya Sabha later mentioned the matter with Sir Hyde East, justice of the Supreme Court. That led to the inspiration of Hindu faculty, later renamed Presidency faculty, Kolkata, on twenty Jan 1817.

Thereafter, David Hare was instrumental in establishing the college Book Society on may six, 1817. It took the initiative to print and publish textbooks in each English and Bengali. This society contributed considerably to the flowering of the Bengal Renaissance.

On September 1818, he established the Calcutta school Society. He and Radhakanta debutante were secretaries of the society. He worked inexhaustibly to ascertain some colleges to show in English and Bengali, in step with new ways of teaching, at such places as Thanthania, Kalitala, and Arpuly. Every day, he visited the colleges and Hindu faculty and met nearly every student. 

Therefore nice was his attachment and commitment to those students that it acted as a good inspiration for the many of them. Death of David Hare:

In later life, he failed to notice time to devote to his watch business and then he sold it to a fan named gray and spent a number of the cash to shop for a tiny low house for himself and also the rest for the event of the faculties. Once an extended lifetime of activity, he fell unwell. He was attacked by Asiatic cholera. One in every one of his students, Dr. Prasanna Kumar Mitra, tried his best however all efforts failing and David Hare died on one June 1842.

As news unfolds around the town, a pall of gloom touches the town. The Christian missionaries refused to allot him land in their cemeteries, as they thought that he was a non-believer. He was buried in what was then the compound of Hare School-Presidency school that he had given. The tomb, marked with a bust sculpture, presently falls among the faculty sq. (recently renamed Vidyasagar Udyan) natatorium, opposite to Hare faculty.
