The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is located in Kanpur and is a public engineering and research institute. The Parliament of India declared IITs as an Institute of National Importance and passed the Indian Institute of Technology ACT. The four campuses were made at Bombay in 1958, Madras in 1959, Kanpur in 1959 and Delhi in 1961 on the recommendation of the Sarkar Committee.

The IIT-Kanpur also has an office abroad with the alumni Sanjeev Khosla who was made as an overseas brand ambassador of the Institute in New York which is located in 62, William Street, Manhattan. The New York office was placed to search for qualified and fully capable faculty from abroad and also tries to collect funds from the alumni who are based there. They have also started a system that invites students and faculty members for joining the IIT-Kanpur Institute.

In IIT-Kanpur a helicopter ferry service was got into the process in June 2013 which is ruined by the Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited. To provide such a service in the country, the IIT-Kanpur was the first institute to provide air facilities. There are two takeoffs daily from Kanpur to Lucknow Airport with the timing of 25 minutes. If any person in the institute needs for the facility he/she can contact the SPO the Student Placement Office at the IIT-Kanpur. The approximate charges for the ride per person are around 6800, and the service of the helicopter is subjected to the availability of choppers’ rights.

History of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur:

In 1959 the Indian Institute of Kanpur also known as IIT-Kanpur or IITK was established by an Indian Institute of Technology ACT. It was first started in a room in the canteen structure of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute at Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur in 1959. The IIT-Kanpur was moved which is located now at the Grand Trunk Road near the village of Kalyanpur in Kanpur. The IIT-Kanpur Academic programs and research laboratories programs between the Kanpur Indo-American Program (KIAP) helped to set up all the programs very much. The American University which was tied with the Indo-American Program were:

• Institute of Technology

Sir P. K. Kelkar was the first Director of the IIT-Kanpur Institute, and later in 2002, the Central Library was renamed as of director name PK Kelkar Library. For Computer Science Education the IIT-Kanpur was the first institute to start the education under the help and assistance of economist John Kenneth Galbraith.

The other computer courses were then started at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1963 on the IBM 1620 System of the computer. An Independent program in Computer Science and Engineering that leads the courses to M. Tech & Ph. D degrees were started in the year 1971.  The Kanpur Indo-American Program was gone to a dead-end in 1972 because of the problems due to the US involving in Pakistan’s problems.

The Campus of IIT Kanpur:

The campus of IIT Kanpur is situated on the Grand Trunk Road that is about 15 KM from west of Kanpur City. The IIT-Kanpur consist of about 1000 acres of land which was donated by the Uttar Pradesh Govt. in the year 1960 and the IIT-Kanpur Institute had moved to its location by 1963.  The IIT-Kanpur consist of around 7000 candidates in which around 4000 are for undergraduate and 3000 are for postgraduate and about 500 research associates.

The IIT Kanpur has opened an extension center in Noida which was started in Dec 2012, and the land given for the campus of Noida was around 5 acres which were granted by the Uttar Pradesh govt. In sector 62 of Noida city. The total cost for the new campus was around 25 crores, and the place was it was situated was less than an hour from New Delhi and the Indra Gandhi International Airport. The new Noida campus contains a seven storage guest house, an auditorium, seminar halls and an International Relations office.

Academic Area of IIT Kanpur:

IIT-Kanpur Academic Area has academic buildings and hostel buildings and many more facilities such as the library which is named PK Kelkar Library, Computer Center, National Wind Tunnel Facility and SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Department. It also consists of laboratories and administrative office buildings, and all the departments are connected to the corridor which touches all the major buildings.

Students Activity Center of IIT Kanpur:

Student Activity Center also known as SAC is the house of the major extra-curricular programs. The SAC has two departments one is the old building which is known as old-SAC, and the other which is recently constructed is known as New-SAC it also has an air open theater that has a capacity of around 1400 people. All the SAC department are managed and maintained by the Students Gymkhana at IIT-Kanpur. Students Gymkhana was established in the year 1962 and are the student government organization of IIT-Kanpur.

The gymkhana functions and controlled by the Senate.
In IIT-Kanpur the academic policies and the student’s gymkhana are decided by the Senate which is selected by the election of the universities and all professors of IIT and student representatives. The Senate approves and controls the courses, examination, results and appoints a committee to look after the specific universities matters. To maintain the educational and university standard, the Senate looks after the teaching and research programs of the Institute.

The ex-officio Chairman of the Senate is the Director of an IIT. The primary person in the institute’s activities is the Director and Deputy Director who are helped by the Dean who is from the Ministry of Research and Development, Dean who is from Planning Department, and Dean who is from Student Affairs and the head of all department and the centers of universities.

Departments of IIT Kanpur:

The IIT-Kanpur have various courses for undergraduate & postgraduate degrees in management & social sciences.

Undergraduate: The IIT-Kanpur has a 4-year B. Tech programs such as Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences & Bioengineering. The students have to go through the joint entrance exam to get admission in all these programs. The IIT-Kanpur also has 4-years of B.S. programs in Applied Science, Earth Science, and Economics.

Postgraduate: The IIT-Kanpur also has postgraduate courses in Engineering that offer M. Tech Master of Technology, MS, and Ph. D degrees. The students who are willing to take admission in dual M. Sc. Courses in basic science has to go through the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. JAM exam. For M.Des 2-years, M.B.A. 2-years and M.Sc 2-years degrees, entry to M.Tech is made through the GATE Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering once in a year. Entry to M. Des is made through both the test GATE & CEED Common Aptitude Entrance Exam for Design once in a year.
