The Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai also called IIT Mumbai or IITB was ranked as India’s top university by the QS World University in 2014. The Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai is located in Powai Mumbai and is a public engineering and research institute. The Parliament of India declared IITs as an Institute of National Importance and passed the Indian Institute of Technology ACT.

The four campuses were made at Mumbai in 1958, Madras in 1959, Kanpur in 1959 and Delhi in 1961 on the recommendation of the Sarkar Committee. The first batch of 100 students Schools in Mumbai in 1958. It has vast acres of campus with expanding to include more than 500 buildings and is established in Powai, Mumbai.

History of Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai:

The Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai IITB was established in 1958 and was located in Powai 29 km from the city of Mumbai which was later named Bombay. The IITB was the second number of IIT which was established in India under the help of UNESCO and the funds for development were contributed by the Soviet Union. The UNESCO provided equipment and technical experts, especially for the Soviet Union. The site taken for the IIT Bombay was 29 km away from the Bombay city with an area of 550 acres which was given by the State Govt. of Bombay.

Because the building of IIT Bombay was under construction the first academic session of the institute was done temporarily at the Synthetic and Art Silk Mills Research Association building which was located at Worli in Mumbai with a group of 100 students. For establishing the Institute, the main reason was to develop facilities for students in specialized engineering and technological sciences.

The first batch of 100 students was selected from approximately 3400 applicants for admission to the undergraduate engineering courses of Aerospace, Engineering Physics, Computer, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Energy, Metallurgical Engineering and MSc Chemistry. Jawaharlal Nehru kept the foundation stone of the Institute which was located at Powai in Mar 1959.

The Campus of Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai:

The IIT-Mumbai campus consists of 550 acres of land with the academic area with the main building of the Institute, various departments annexes, and auditoria. All the building departments are connected to the corridor which is named as an Infinite corridor. The IIT-Mumbai campus is situated at Powai between the Vihar Lake and Powai Lake.

There are at least 16 hostels on the campus for the student accommodation in which the two hostels numbers 10 and 11 are newly constructed, and shelter number 15 is for the Female student. The campus of IIT-Mumbai is also has a green covering nature and is not touched by the pollution of the city though it is located in Mumbai. The big reason for his greenery is the nearness of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Very often the animals are also occasionally seen such as Leopards, Panthers and Gharial crocodiles by the bank of Powai Lake. In chase of hunting food sometimes they enter into campus also.

The campus also has two buildings of high schools one is named Kendra Vidyalaya, and the other is called IIT Campus school. The IIT-Mumbai campus contains two Olympic size swimming pools, hockey, cricket, football grounds. It also has basketball, squash, tennis and volleyball courts. The campus also contains (SAC) Students Activity Center for many different programs and extracurricular activities. It has a great view of greenery and lakeside. The institutes also provide some facilities such as a Central library for the students, many central workshops, Printing press, and the computer center which started running in 1986 with the latest updated facilities.

Extra Cultural Activities in IIT Mumbai:

Every year in the month of DEC the annual Science and Technology festival of IIT-Mumbai is being done which was first started in 1998. The Science and Technology festival of IIT is one of the largest festivals in Asia.
