Formerly known as the giant hornet, the giant hornet, as its name suggests, looks terrifying from all angles. In the video below, you can see thousands of hornets attacking a man in a biotech suit. The video has over 39,000 likes and thousands of comments. One wrote, “The whole noise sounds like a squadron of B-52 bombers,” while another says, “I’m about to file my two-week notice right now.”

The beekeepers and people dealing with pests are really amazing. It is not easy to risk yourself to prevent problems in the ecosystem. We take our hats off to these hard working people. The life cycle of the giant hornet usually begins in the spring when the queen bee wakes up from hibernation and looks for a nesting site. Colonies are difficult to find because giant hornets often nest underground.

Wasps typically burrow in the ground, inhabit tunnels already made by other creatures such as mice, or forage near rotting tree roots. This kind of wasp is a nuisance! They live with the Queen and her numerous workers. They typically travel about 1 mile, but may travel up to about 8 miles in search of food.

The Sting of a Northern Giant Hornet

Luckily, suits help protect people from being bitten. When their colony is threatened, they continue to sting their targets, killing up to 50 people a year in Japan. That’s why the media sometimes calls them “killer hornets.”

Giant hornet stingers are usually about a quarter inch long, which is larger and more dangerous than most other biting insect stingers. In fact, their spines are long enough to pierce a beekeeper’s suit. These insects attack in large numbers when threatened, and may sting the victim multiple times. If a victim is stung multiple times by a giant hornet, the effects can be severe enough to cause organ failure.

These bites are painful and contain neurotoxins. Compared to honeybees, giant hornet stings can be more painful to humans, releasing up to 28 times more venom in just one sting. However, they require multiple stings and are extremely rare unless you have a severe allergy or hypersensitivity to insect bites.
