Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one of the well-known public engineering and research institutes of India. Also, the government of India has announced the Institute as national significance. It is set in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and the year 1959, it was launched with the help of technical and financial assistance from the former govt of West Germany. Indian Institute of Technology Madras is the third institute which was built by the government through a Parliament Act.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras has around 1,250 staff, 550 faculty and over 8,000 applicants and its campus occupy 2.5 km of land which was formerly a part of Guindy National Park. Every year the numbers of applications are growing up. It is also the house of the spotted deer, monkeys, and blackbucks and many rare wild animals were found.

History of IIT Madras:

In India the govt. West German offered help with technical assistance for creating an institute of higher education in engineering in 1956. In 1959 the agreement was signed in Bonn west Germany between India and Germany. The first Indo-German agreement was signed to create the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. At that time it was the biggest educational project which was sponsored by West German and was supported with technical and financial help.

The joint efforts of India and West Germany have led to several researched in universities and institutions in Germany till the year. Although the Indian and German collaboration has ended now, several types of research are still working such as the DAAD program and Humboldt Fellowships.

The institute was launch in 1959 by the union minister for scientific research and cultural affairs who was Professor Humayun Kabir. The parliament of India declared seven IITs as an Institute of National Importance and passed the Indian Institute of Technology ACT. The four campuses were made at Bombay in 1958, Madras in 1959, Kanpur in 1959 and Delhi in 1961 on the recommendation of the Sarkar Committee.

To add the new IIT’s the Indian Institute of Technology ACT was made in 1961. In Assam, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi promises the creation of new IIT in Assam to the students of Assam. In 1960 this was the sixth campus at Guwahati under the Assam record. The University of Roorkee was India’s oldest engineering college which was given as IIT status in 2001.

The campus of IIT Madras:

In Chennai Sardar Patel Road there is the main entrance of IIT-Madras which is bounded by the residential districts of Velachery and Adyar. The official seal of the Governor of Tamil Nadu which is Raj Bhavan, the campus is close to that only. In Velachery (near Anna Garden MTC bus stop, Gandhi Road ( Toll Gate) and Taramani gate (close to Ascendas Tech Park) are all the other entrances.

The campus is connected by city buses, and also it is only 10 km away from the Chennai Airport and 12 km from the Chennai Central Railway Station. The Bonn Avenue and Delhi Avenue Two parallel roads, which cut through residential areas, before they meet at the Gajendra Circle. There are bus facilities for the students running regularly between the main gate, Gajendra Zone, Academic Zone and the Hostel Zone.

The institute has 18 hostels for the accommodation of the students as well as staff and professors. The three hostels such as Sharavati, Sarayu and newly constructed Sarayu extension is accommodated for the girl’s students. In two centralized halls named ‘Vindhya and Himalaya’ dining facilities are available for the students who are accommodated. The name of the hostel are given the same as the rivers of Indian name and students have to spend their full time at the campus and institute.

Administration and Organization of IIT Madras:

The Indian Institute of Madras IITM is an independent institute that is controlled by the Institute of Technology ACT. Total IITs are controlled by the IIT Council which is an independent body selected by the govt. Of India. The chairmen of the council are the minister of human resource and development, govt. Of India.

In IIT the academic policies are decided by the Senate which is selected by the election of the universities and all professors of IIT and student representatives. The Senate approves and controls the courses, examination, results and appoints a committee to look after the specific universities matters. To maintain the educational and university standard, the Senate looks after the teaching and research programs of the Institute. The ex-officio Chairman of the Senate is the Director of an IIT. The Director of the Indian Institute of Technology was Dr. M. S. Ananth from 2001 to 2011 and from Sept. 2011, prof. (Dr.) Bhaskar Ramamurthi has taken the post of director.

Academics of IIT Madras:

Approximately 16 courses in Engineering, Sciences, Management and Humanities with undergraduate, research degrees and postgraduate Madras IIT offers. Belonging to science and engineering departments and centers of the Institute there are approximately 360 faculties. Admission Tests:

The selection of undergraduate students to the B Tech and Dual Degree at IIT Bombay are done through the Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) of the IIT’s. The JEE Entrance Exam will be conducted by the IIT-Madras in 2017. The selection of the five-year integrated Master of Arts (MA) program is done through the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) by the IIT-Madras.

The selection of Post-graduate students to the M-Tech and MS program is done through the (GATE) Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. The selection of the two-year M Sc. Program, B Sc program, an MBA program are done through the (CAT) Common Admission Test. For the Joint Admission Test to M Sc. Are done through (JAM).

Student Activities in IIT Madras:

Shaastra: The Annual Technical Festival of IIT-Madras is called Shaastra which is held in the second week of Jan. The IIT-Madras festival Shaastra is the first festival in the world which is ISO 9001-2000 certified. The festival of IIT-Madras is known for its activities such as competitive events, programming, simulation quizzes, robotics, junkyard wars, lectures, video-conference, demonstrations and technical exhibitions. Many namely peoples are invited from various fields of technology from all over the world for giving their experience and lectures to the students who are going through the IITs.

Saarang: This festival was once called ‘Mardi Gras’ which was later changed to Saarang in 1996 to show the cultural and environmental roots of the festival. Recently this festival has been awarded ISO 9001:2015 certified. The festival Saarang includes a program such as speaking, dancing, thespian, quizzing, word games, professional shows, music and fashion art. It is a five-day program which is held in Jan. Approximate 70,000 students and people from the country appear in this festival program. This is one of the biggest festivals in India which is run by students.
